Fire Doors (2)

Fire doors are designed to prevent the spread of fire and smoke within a building or facility, therefore maximising safe evacuation time for occupants. Forming an inactive barrier, they are a passive form of fire protection.

Fire doors are made from fire-resistant materials such as fire-resistant glass, gypsum, steel, timber, vermiculite boards and aluminium. They must be specified and installed by suitably experienced professionals to ensure no gaps exist between the wall and door frame, which prevents the egress of smoke from one room to another.

A common standard – EN 16034 – is enforced across Europe. In the UK, Part B of the Building Regulations sets out minimum requirements for fire protection, including fire doors.
