Flame and Spark / Arc Detection for Energy Transition Challenges

The detector addresses slow growing fires as well as fast eruptions of fire using improved UV/IR technology. The detector operates in all weather and light conditions.

The detector provides high-definition (HD) video output of the monitored area with clear imaging of a fire event and of personnel at distances up to 100 ft (30m). This allows the rescue team to be aware of the exact situation before entering the hazardous area. The detector automatically records video of any fire event (1 minute pre- and up to 3 minutes post alarm initiation). These features, along with the built-in event logger, provide additional means to study the cause and development of fire events for “lessons learned” reviews.

An integrated High-Definition (HD) IP Camera allows clear imaging of fire and people at 100 ft. (30m). All fire events are recorded and stored in the detector for local or remote download and analysis. Continuous HD video can also be streamed live to a control room and recorded on a Network Video Recorder (NVR).

Flame detection for recycling facilities and zombie batteries

Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are now widely used in a wide range of applications, ranging from portable handheld devices through to energy storage in peak shaving plants, and uninterruptable power supply systems, etc. Compared to lead batteries, the energy density of Li-ion batteries is close to 300% higher and can sustain up to twenty times as many charging cycles. These batteries are also more environmentally friendly and are practically maintenance-free. This type of battery does however, present a considerable fire hazard. If a Li-ion battery is damaged, short-circuited or exposed to high temperatures, a reaction can occur resulting in a rapid and extreme temperature rise, causing the battery to catch fire. This fire can quickly escalate, via a chain reaction, to nearby materials, or other batteries in storage applications, potentially leading to widespread damage and revenue loss.

The Civil Aviation Authority publication CAP 437 “standards for offshore helicopter landing areas” has become an accepted world-wide source of reference. The latest edition, 8.2 July 2021, maintains its position as one of the go-to documents for helicopter safety offshore. The requirements set out in the publication relate to fixed and mobile installations, whether they are operating in the oil & gas or renewable energy sectors. CAP 437 requires new build Normally Unattended Installations (NUIs) be fitted with deck integrated ﬁre ﬁghting systems (DIFFS) and existing NUI’s be retro-ﬁtted with an alternative automatically activated ﬁre ﬁghting system. The overall design of a DIFFS should incorporate a method of fire detection, typically optical flame detection, and be configured to avoid spurious trips.
