Dublin, Ireland, February 22 2017- Globalstar Europe Satellite Services Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Globalstar Inc. (NYSE MKT: GSAT) and the leader in satellite messaging and emergency notification technologies, today announced that two EU peacekeeping organisations have deployed the SafeFleet Telematics fleet management solution, incorporating Globalstar’s SmartOne device.

The European Union Monitoring Mission in Georgia (EUMM) and EU Rule of Law Mission (EULEX) both chose SafeFleet Telematics to track and manage fleets, monitor driver behaviour, and safeguard personnel and civilian passengers in Georgia and Kosovo respectively.

Both organisations have responsibility for maintaining law and order, as well as carrying out judiciary, policing duties and border patrol in their regions.

They both sought a fleet tracking and monitoring platform to replace incumbent technology that was deemed inadequate. There was a rigorous tender process for each of the two deployments, all hotly contested by regional competitors and leading European providers proposing technologies including radio, GSM and SIM-based solutions. Only SafeFleet Telematics was able to deliver the required high level of functionality, reach and reliability, and at the right price.

The phased deployment at the two organisations is now complete with SafeFleet Telematics installed in vehicles used for logistics and transport, including armoured vehicles and all-terrain pathfinder vehicles. The more recent deployment, for EULEX, incorporated over 530 Globalstar SmartOne B Line Power devices.

“In many areas where these peacekeeping organisations operate, the GSM network is not stable or far-reaching enough,” said Oliver Albu, International Business Manager, SafeFleet Telematics. “The most critical requirement was ubiquitous and reliable connection even where adequate GSM could not be guaranteed. Globalstar satisfied this demand.

”Globalstar VAR, ETA Automatizari Industriale SRL, based in Romania, developed the SafeFleet Telematics platform, a bespoke hardware and software-based solution that automatically switches between GSM and Globalstar’s simplex satellite network. This dual technology approach delivers flexibility and maximises cost effectiveness.

SafeFleet Telematics also includes an RFID-based identification system to ensure each driver is authorised and in possession of the required licence. Its one-touch panic button enables the driver to alert security teams and to summon support in an emergency. It also allows customers to monitor fuel consumption and other engine metrics to optimise vehicle performance and manage maintenance scheduling.

SmartOne is a plug and play simplex device which allows organisations to monitor and manage fixed and portable assets including shipping containers, transport trailers, construction machinery and vehicle fleets. SmartOne enables customers to track assets and alerts them to any unexpected motion, such as attempts of theft.

Features of SmartOne include high reliability, long battery life and the ability to seamlessly switch between battery and line-power as required. SmartOne uses motion sensors, comparative GPS positions and sensors to gather and transmit asset status information over Globalstar’s satellite network, such as movement and location reports, geo-fencing alerts, stop/start messaging and theft recovery alerts via email or text message. It also transmits battery status, input alarm status and diagnostic information.

“ETA Automatizari Industriale is an innovative Globalstar partner that has had great success with its fleet management and tracking platform.  Its technology is now improving security for organisations that are vital to EU regional development. SafeFleet Telematics is enabling these personnel to carry out their important operations with better efficiency, communications reliability and security,” said Corry Brennan, Simplex Regional Sales Manager EMEA at Globalstar.

Operational support from space: Satellites enable greater security, better safety as well as cost efficiency

Today’s satellite technologies are helping organisations enhance security through reliable tracking of assets and people. But these systems simultaneously deliver many operational benefits. Gavan Murphy, Director of Marketing EMEA at Globalstar, explores how flexibility, functionality and reliability all come together with satellite solutions for security.

Security is top of mind for everyone today. Governmental agencies, first responders, and NGOs are all placing more emphasis on safeguarding staff and assets as these essential workers travel to ever more remote locations and play vital roles in hazardous environments.

In part, this is because regulators are increasingly mandating that organisations demonstrate a commitment to upholding the welfare of personnel. Commercial and non-commercial entities have a duty of care to safeguard staff who work alone, or in isolated regions, and those who face hazards on the job.
