Following the resounding successes at YOTEL Gatwick, Heathrow and Schiphol back in 2007 and 2008, Kaba have now installed a further access control system at YOTEL’s fourth successive hotel in New York.

YOTEL is a revolutionary hotel concept that is defining the global hotel industry. Inspired by first-class airline cabins, YOTEL Gatwick, Heathrow and Schiphol became an ideal choice for travellers looking to refresh and relax during a long transit, delay or to get a decent night’s sleep before an early flight.

The safety of YOTEL’s guests and their belongings are of paramount importance which is why each of the cabins (approx 146 in total), are secured with a Kaba Solitaire 710-11 lock.

Situated in Times Square West at 570 Tenth Avenue (West 42nd Street) the New York Hotel is the first non-airport location and the first YOTEL outside of Europe.

Boasting 669 stylish guest rooms, it is the largest hotel to open in New York in 2011.

Kaba recommended and ultimately installed the contactless Ilco E790 lock for this project.

  • Lock works on RFID (radio frequency identification) waves
  • Simple installation and with no card reader to maintain and clean
  • Audit trail of the last 400 transactions
  • Standard mechanical key override
  • All electronics and batteries are located in the front lock housing - no need to disturb guests for maintenance checks
  • Software upgrades can be implemented on site, eliminating delays

Nigel Buchanan, Yotel’s Operations Director explained, “Kaba was specified for this project due to the simplicity and efficiency of the whole system, both to install and manage”.

Nigel chose to manage the guest room door locks using Kaba’s ATLAS system, which is integrated into the hotels property management software to provide greater control over the hotel.

Kaba  ATLAS (Advanced Technology Lodging Access System) provides a web based interface that allows for simple and easy programming of guest room doors. The menu-driven software provides on-screen help so that operators can resolve issues quickly and offers the facility for operators to work in the language of their choice.

In the lobby, self-service Shere kiosks dispense guest room key cards and invoices for visitors checking-in or out but staff are on hand 24/7 for assistance.

Nigel commented, “The Kaba installations at YOTEL Gatwick, Heathrow and Schipol are a success with the access control system proving very efficient for our customers to use – the main priority for all aspects of the YOTEL offering, so it was an obvious choice to continue our relationship with Kaba at YOTEL New York”.

Security and accountability are key features for this seamlessly integrated solution. Both the ATLAS system and the 790 lock offer a detailed audit trail, providing legal support in the event of unauthorised entry to a room and ensure the front desk of any hotel can have a single solution for managing their guests.

The Ilco series sets the standard for premium hotel locks and is one of the access control systems that has established Kaba as a leading provider within the hospitality industry with sustained success.

Kaba manufactures and installs the world leading range of hotel door locks which are used in the best known hotel chains, independent hotels, conference facilities and accommodation units.
