When it comes to ITAR compliance, organizations need to run a tight ship.
Stringent rules paired with complex operations can make compliance a tall order, but failing to adhere means opening the door to extremely harsh penalties. Two recent cases illustrate this. Compliance problems for two large organizations resulted in $13 million USD and $30 million USD in civil fines and remedial compliance measures respectively. Administration, documentation, and communication mistakes contributed to these penalties, and unfortunately, these are categories of errors that we often see organizations encounter.
In this piece, we examine the errors that led to these penalties and discuss what organizations can do to reduce the possibility of repeating them.

We all know what it feels like to walk into a new place and feel completely invisible. A good handshake is often all it takes to dispel that feeling, but unfortunately, our frenetic world makes it harder to personally meet the people who visit our organizations.
The first time a guest walks into your facility, the welcome you give them sets the tone for the entire relationship. If, before anything else, your visitors know that they are anticipated, valued and remembered, then you have laid the foundation for a partnership built on real human connection.
Given its enterprise size, managing facilities and hosting guests is a complex matter for Thermo Fisher, the American multinational biotechnology product development company with over 65,000 employees globally. Their Oyster Point location in San Francisco hosts hundreds of visitors each week and multiple buildings are needed. Each guest is unique and is visiting for a different purpose which requires a high degree of customization. Operating in the biotechnology and medical industry, Thermo Fisher Scientific faces a highly regulated environment. The organization is required to adhere to compliance standards and manage detailed audit trails on who has had access at any given point in time. Health and safety are key priorities for every location and requires strict procedures for anyone walking through their doors. With that in mind, Thermo Fisher looked for the leading enterprise visitor management system for its locations.
For the second time in a row, G2Crowd has named Traction Guest a Category Leader for Visitor Management Systems. We’ve been at the forefront of this category since G2Crowd first recognized it, and are now pushing it into new territory.
Traction Guest, a pioneer in visitor management systems, announced that it has entered into a preferred partnership with Gemalto, a digital security hardware firm that produces ID scanners capable of processing high visitor volume. Traction Guest's vision is to integrate high-end ID scanners into their visitor check-in process to bolster security and efficiency. Gemalto provides unique value as Traction Guest couples Gemalto’s reader technology with its visitor management system, offering superior flexibility, customer experience and security features. Now, armed with Gemalto scanners, Traction Guest will offer an Assisted-Check-In option that security officials can use to deliver an efficient sign-in experience that strengthens security. “As far as we know,” says Metcalfe, “Traction Guest is the first cloud-based VMS to use high-end ID scanners to provide this kind of assisted check-in process.”
Traction Guest announces an industry-first solution that integrates parking management with its leading enterprise visitor management system.
The new parking module provides unprecedented control over how enterprises govern parking as part of an integrated approach to visitor management. Disjointed tools and processes create significant gaps in security and the guest experience at large facilities. Keith Metcalfe, CEO of Traction Guest explains: “Enterprise organizations have complex requirements for maintaining airtight security and emergency preparedness across a range of locations.”
Businesses can now digitize their parking inventory and designate zones for different types of visitors and vehicles such as handicap, electric cars or VIP. Being able to monitor parking usage and reserve spaces in real-time is the first step in enabling capacity planning within a centralized, enterprise-grade VMS platform.
Traction Guest Inc., a leading developer of Visitor Management Systems (VMS), has earned a SOC 2 Type-1 attestation. These controls are a baseline for any organization that provides cloud computing solutions. The leadership team at Traction Guest sees the SOC 2 Type-1 as a foundation for delivering ever-greater service to their clients and partners. Data security is one of Traction Guest’s core values, and as CEO Keith Metcalfe explains, “Values don’t mean anything unless you’re willing to take concrete steps to enact them.” To that end, Traction Guest ordered a SOC 2 audit through a third-party to ensure that data security was not just a talking point, but part of Traction Guest’s DNA. Traction Guest’s Service Organization Control 2 (or SOC 2) attestation covers three operational and technological controls: security, availability and confidentiality.
