Manchester Airport Group required an easy-to-install, cost-effective security solution to protect East Midlands Airport against the threat of vehicle-borne attack.

To meet this requirement, Townscape Products installed a robust hostile vehicle mitigation system comprising Counter Terror Blocks, shallow mount PAS 68 Bollards and a manual Counter Terror Barrier. This served to reinforce the perimeter security of the airport and provide an effective deterrent against vehicle-borne attacks.

Client: Manchester Airport Group

Location: East Midlands Airport, Derbyshire, UK

Background: East Midlands Airport, part of Manchester Airport Group (MAG) lies between the cities of Nottingham Leicester and Derby. The international airport has more than four million holiday goers and business travellers pass through every year, making it the eleventh busiest airport in the UK.

Project details: MAG needed an easy to install and cost effective way to protect its terminal building from vehicle borne attacks. After a number of successful projects at other airports part of the group, Townscape was appointed to install its Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) system.

74 of Townscape’s PAS 68 Counter Terror (CT) Blocks, 10 of its PAS 68 shallow mount bollards and a PAS 68 manual CT Barrier were installed as part of the £190,000 contract. PerfomaCast™ polymer bollard sleeves were used to give the shallow mount bollards an aesthetically pleasing finish and keep the maintenance low.

The CT Blocks were positioned at the front of the airport terminal, adjacent to the vehicle drop-off points to prevent unwanted vehicle incursion onto the busy pedestrian plazas, as well as providing additional seating for passengers waiting in the pick-up zones.

Result: Townscape has helped to boost security with a low cost and low maintenance solution and the busy airport now has the perimeter protection against vehicle borne attacks.

Jonathan Goss, managing director of Townscape said: “East Midlands Airport has more than four million visitors pass through its doors each year, so a hostile vehicle mitigation (HMV) system was needed to defend the building, whilst also providing an open and inclusive perimeter.

“We used our PerfomaCast™ polymer bollard sleeves to give the shallow mount bollards an aesthetically pleasing finish and keep the maintenance and cost low. The CT blocks were placed at the front of the building to give a strong visual deterrent, whilst also providing seating for pedestrians waiting in the pick-up area.”
