Axis Communications join forces with specialist systems engineer and Axis partner Cybertronix Ltd to provide the control system for BBC Weathers studios which have relocated from Television Centre to Broadcasting House, its new state-of-the-art home.
Broadcasting House is the multimedia broadcasting centre which brings together the BBC’s national and international radio, television and online journalism under one roof for first time alongside the broadcaster’s Television and Network Radio services. The installation centred on the relocation of the existing BBC Weather studios creating three new cutting edge enclosed and open-air studios, all built using IP technology and required the switch to be made from the old studios to the new, overnight.
Stuart Box, director at Cybertronix explained: “The use of the Axis technology has helped transform the whole studio away from legacy systems to the use of IP technology. The new studios can now be controlled from any remote location and, if there is a problem with a studio, it can be serviced remotely or the control can even be transferred to an entirely new equipment room at the push of a button – something that just wouldn’t be possible without IP technology."
“We have worked with Axis for over a decade and during that time they have always delivered for us. This project was no exception and we received the usual quick, efficient and helpful service that we have come to expect from Axis.”
AXIS Q7401 video encoders were used for a variety of uses including background alignment and remote fault finding. The encoders also ensured that the video streams could be sent over an IP network to be viewed or recorded from anywhere in the building.
AXIS P8221 Network I/O Audio Modules were also used in the installation in order to mix video sources, control mute, voice processor and voice levels in the studios.
Atul Rajput, regional director, Northern Europe, Axis Communications added: “This is another great example of how Axis technology is being specified by our partners and used to help improve systems for some of the world’s biggest brands.
“The technology has contributed to the transformation of the new studios and allowed practically every process to be operated remotely. It opens the door to endless possibilities and is a quicker, more efficient and effective way of working.”

“ Being able to view the footage on our phones in real time and flick between the different cameras in the café is great. We can zoom in on different areas and slow down or speed up the playback.” Jaya Da Costa, Owner of the Pause Cat Café.
“The Axis cameras have proved exactly the right fit for London Underground here at Canary Wharf station. As we move to 24-hour operation on London Underground stations in a few months’ time, reliability and ease of maintenance are all key operational requirements. Axis cameras have met all these needs and I anticipate they will be deployed in other Jubilee Line extension stations as they are upgraded over the next few years.” Dave Perry, Delivery Manager, Station Capital Expenditure, London Underground.
“ Chester Zoo now has a video security platform which is highly reliable, expandable and future-proof. We know that whatever our requirement in terms of security intelligence, video analytics and integration, it’s now possible with our new IP video system. Speed and appropriateness of response to threats is now assured.” Nigel Peers, Security Manager, Chester Zoo.
“Observit offers a turnkey solution that gives you complete control of the entire process, from simple installation to monitoring of the cameras in each bus and the collection of image material. The entire process is covered in a highly functional and quality manner.” Bram Lauwers, Product Manager Digital Services at Nobina.
“Our analogue system was no longer as innovative as it once was; upgrading to HD IP camera technology made complete sense to us as we strive to maintain our status as the leading event facility in Northern Ireland.” Brian Hughes, Group Head of Facilities at The Odyssey Complex.
“Today the new system is only used if there is a security incident. But in the future we expect managers in specialist areas like visual merchandising to access cameras to assess whether agreed store layouts for new lines are being observed and whether these are working for store visitors.” Lee Bingham, Head of IT, Paul Smith.
“Wireless cameras on the front of the buildings have proven to be a huge asset. Following the initial installation, we noticed an individual attaching a scanner to the cash machine. We’d never had this additional vision before and therefore would not have identified this fraudulent activity prior to the installation.” Phil Parker, Venue Operations Manager at Twickenham Stadium.
